Angola started operations at two solar energy facilities – the 188 MW Biopio Solar Plant and the 96 MW Baia Farta Solar Plant – in Benguela province in August 2022. The projects were developed by MCA Group with funding provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
Angola is currently developing several solar power projects that tie in to the country’s Angola Energy programme and its environmental commitments. Among current developments is a mega-project consisting of seven photovoltaic plants that will be commissioned by Q2 2023 and additional projects funded by the Angolan and US governments.
Located in the country’s arid southwest, the plant will improve electricity access and grid stability while supporting Angola’s broader climate and energy goals. Meanwhile, construction continues on the Luena Solar Power Station in Moxico Province (east of Angola).
Angola’s solar initiative aligns with wider trends across the continent. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports that Africa added 4.2 GW of new renewable capacity in 2024, a 6.7% increase from the previous year. This brings the continent’s total installed renewable capacity to 67 GW.
Our standardized photovoltaic power generation and energy storage products are engineered for reliability, safety, and efficient deployment. All systems include comprehensive monitoring and control systems with remote management capabilities.
